41. The BC Needlefish - Trolling Bucktail style flies tied on tubes was very common during the glory days of ocean Silver Salmon recreational fisheries of the 1950s -- 1980s from Northern California through SE Alaska. Regions like Puget Sound and Vancouver Island spawned many versions of Coho Tube flies that had local followings and rationale for the selection of one pattern over another. Near as I can tell, fly anglers used these tube Bucktail flies to troll as well as cast to feeding Coho in saltwater. The various fly patterns are sometimes suggestive of a natural baitfish and sometimes just wild bright flashy fish strike attractors. This Tube Bucktail is a simple pattern inspired by several flies I have seen popularized by BC anglers specifically imitating big Needlefish. The Steve Farrar's Blend material is easy to work with, durable, and swims your fly true, without the worry of needing to select the perfect Bucktail hair. 43. Albacore Clouser Minnow - I don't recall reading much about fishing Clousers for Pacific Albacore. Why not? Personal experience taught me that our Albacore do indeed take these flies and I recommend that anyone who ventures out to the deep blue carry at least a few Clousers to toss at the beasties. Our offshore Oregon tuna will take Clousers when trolled, on the drop, and on a fast-strip retrieve. On occasion, they will also not take Clousers, just like they will ignore plenty of other flies. So as usual, fish your flies with a seasoned, reasoned confidence that acknowledges the possibility our finest offerings could be spurned. Or not. 45. Magic Fly (Pale Watery wingless wet variant) - I will be the first to tell you that I don’t believe in magic bullet fliesflies that you tie on and start bailing fish. This pattern is the closest I’ve found to being the exception. The Sulphur hatch is notorious for producing stillborn flies and frustrated anglers. The same could be said of summer stenos, which have left me muttering to myself on more than one occasion. The first time I fished this fly, it was a classic June Sulphur night on the Farmington. I had a whole pool of trout at my command. They rose to the fly with such carelessness and confidence that I couldn’t believe what was happening. It must be magic. I treat this fly with silica floatant (my favorite is Frog’s Fanny) and fish it like a dry, on a long leader on a dead drift. The soft hackles and spikey body create a must-eat-me-now illusion that turns trout stupid. Alter the size and color and you’ve got a fine match for dorotheas and stenos. The Magic Fly is based on the old Pale Watery Wingless wet. - fly fishing video channel - Global FlyFisher

47. Copper John bead head nymph - In this fly tying tutorial, I selected one of the most popular flies in the country: John Barr's Copper John. This heavily weighted pattern is distinctive in its look; the Ultra Wire abdomen and epoxy over the wing case set this apart from other flies. When tying, I did vary the epoxy by utilizing a UV glass glue instead, plus I also encourage others to create their own variations to the Copper John. Featured in this tutorial are S402 hooks by Allen Fly Fishing (http://www.allenflyfishing.com/s402-streamer-2xl/); these hooks, and their barbless counterparts the S402BL, are ideal for this pattern in that they're the 2xl shank that John recommends.
