81. Iced Pupa - Wine - This is one of the most effective midge patterns that I fish in the winter and early spring. I've had success with this fly on the Colorado, Frying Pan, Roaring Fork, Gunnison and Uncomphagre rivers within the last few years. I generally fish this pattern as the "end" fly on a tandem rigging set-up. I will use a heavy tungsten fly such as a "UV Ice Prince" or "Wired UV Stone" as my lead fly. This will insure that my fly reaches the bottom fast for an optimal drift as well as attracts fish that are looking for a "hearty" meal. So tie up some of these midges and see for yourself how successful they can be. 83. Yamamoto's FA Nymph - I can't emphasize the importance of nymph emergence during mayfly hatches and how intensely trout key on the stage. All of my literature review and observations at Livingston's spring creek support this theory. We are not talking about "misc nymph fly patterns fished under bobber". Rather, mayfly nymph as creature. Indeed fishing for this stage is as technical as dry-fly fishing for duns. FA stands for Floating & Ascending, meant to be fished in the film or slightly below during the hatch. Situation goes: trout are obviously rising but without breaking the surface. The matching dry-fly dun and its best presentation won't do a job. That's because trout are keying on ascending nymphs in the water column rather than making effort to feed on duns on the surface or in the air. That's when floating and ascending nymph patterns become key-players. 84. Extended Mayfly Body - In this fly tying tutorial, I demonstrate one (of many!) technique for creating extended mayfly bodies using deer hair. This is a great method, and reduces the amount of materials you need for certain patterns, such as the green drake, slate drake (Isonychia), and other mayflies with lengthy bodies/abdomens. When tying flies with this particular method, ensure the body thickness is appropriate to match the natural by either increasing/reducing the size of the needle or selecting a sparser/fuller amount of deer hair. With a little practice, this method is both fun and effective...basically, the best of both worlds! 88. March Brown Wet Fly - Here is a great traditional wet fly pattern, the March Brown. The March Brown is one of the first wet fly patterns I learned to tie and fish. In this video I stray from the standard recipe a little bit to show that your can get similar results by using what you have when you don't have what the standard calls for. 90. Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) Parachute - In this fly tying tutorial, I discuss and explain the steps for a Blue-Winged Olive parachute dry fly, known affectionately to many as the "BWO." This is a great all-around pattern that catches fish throughout the season; the Baetis is a bug that is common to so many of our trout streams and the fish react accordingly. I also discuss the notion of this insect being "masked" by other mayflies, such as the sulfur/sulphur. This is a common tie for a parachute dry fly, and I encourage you to check out some of my other parachute patterns via my YouTube page. Featured in this tutorial is a hook by Allen Fly Fishing ( http://www.allenflyfishing.com/d102bl-dry-fly-wide-gape-barbless/ ); this is an excellent dry fly hook for this and other patterns.
