A tip off from our carp buddies took us to Court Farm Fishery armed with a bag of dog biscuits and some deer hair flies. 163. Bones and GT's - Lured (pun intended) by the promise of uncrowded waves I spent a week on Christmas Island (Kiritimati) ... one of several in the small island chain of Republic of Kiribati. Instead of waves I found bonefishing meca, a fact apparently known by the well geared flyfishing 'tribe'. 'Tribe' is the communal word that I often use to describe the world of surfers, but it fits equally well in the sphere of fly fishing enthusiasts. Like surfers, they are a well traveled, animated bunch and are dead serious about their addiction. They often speak of their pursuits in a language foreign to those outside their tribe (bones = bonefish, gt = giant trevally) and spend hours at the end of the day meticulously re-enacting the triumphs of the day (usually over numerous cold beers). Like the height of the waves ridden, the length of the fish caught seems to increase with each subsequent retelling of the story ... an infectious tribal practice I can totally identify with. Like surfers, fly fisherman travel well equipped with full quiver ... better to bring too much than not enough. Exterior wear is critical ... the buff to fly fishing is the equivalent to the leash to surfing - better bring several just in case! Christmas Island is a short 3 hour flight from Honolulu. Google Earth will help one appreciate the uniqueness of this coral atoll and massive interior lagoon. Its jaw dropping beauty (a serious compliment from one that resides on Kauai) will hypnotize visitors as they get the sunburn of their life. The Kiribati are a photogenic people, full of smiles and seem to be quite comfortable living only a melted ice cap away from sea level. They share their island paradise with fairy terns, boobies and sweetlips (I won't explain!) Although disappointed about the lack of waves, in retrospect I felt content having been exposed to a new a paradise and new tribe - more universally, new friends that share the common passion of adventure travel. - fly fishing video channel - Global FlyFisher

167. Simple Bonefish Crab Fly - A deadly Bonefish Crab Fly that is simple to tie, durable and the fish cannot resist biting it. One advantage to this crab pattern is that it will not make a huge splash in the face of a wary bonefish. This Bonefish Crab is one of the best flies to use for casting at the big bonefish in the Florida Keys Backcountry. I like to tie this crab pattern with elk hair, however any color deer or elk hair will work great. I also chose to use a medium set of dumbbell eyes, but this fly can be tied to meet any fishing situation. Capt Matt guides in Florida and Louisiana for shallow feeding fish. If you haven't tried flats fishing or you love it as much as I do, You need to stand in the front of my boat. go to http://riplips.com for information and booking. - fly fishing video channel - Global FlyFisher

168. Ava's Little Pinky - Ava's Little Pinky is my #1 midge pattern that I fish during the winter and early spring months. I am going be tying this midge larva pattern on an Allen Fly Fishing D103S hook between the sizes of 16 through 22. This particular dry fly hook has a straight eye, 1x --long shank and thin wire. This hook is new to the Allen Fly Fishing hook line up and will soon be one of my favorites, show check them out by visiting www.allenflyfishing.com I generally find that in the winter months, the trout tend to pod in specific areas of the river, generally an area with lots of sunlight. These fish become very picky on what they eat. The pink thread and tubing gives the fly great color, segmentation and depth. The UV Clear Fly Finish head gives the fly's thorax a lot of depth and shine. I have had amazing results when using this fly, generally as the end fly in a tandem nymph rigging set-up. Tie some up and see for yourself! Size 16 -- 18 I'll use Midge Tubing Size 20 -- 22 I'll use Micro Tubing. 170. Action Jackson - The Action Jackson is the most successful articulated streamer pattern that I have ever fished. I am using an AFF MP001 (up-turned eye, multipurpose, stinger hook) for the trailing hook and an AFF S404 (straight eye, 4X-long, round bend, streamer hook) for the front hook. Check them out at http://www.allenflyfishing.com. There are three things that make this pattern so effective. First, most fish do not fully eat a leach, sculpins or bait fish on the first strike; they wound them first by biting their tail. The stinger hook at the tail of the fly reduces the chances of short strikes/ missed opportunities. Secondly, the articulated portion of the tail moves freely in the water and gives the illusion of a swimming leech, sculpin or baitfish. Lastly, the squirrel hair and legs provide excellent movement in the water. The sili legs project lots of UV light that grabs the fish's attention. This pattern is also effective in the following colors; black, rust, chartreuse, brown, tan and natural. You can also tie this pattern in different lengths.
