I tangled with my first Permit two years ago in the Florida Keys on a live crab](after a tarpon destroyed my 8 weight flyrod earlier that morning). Since that time I have been intrigued with how the very wary Permit love those little crabs . Moreover I have been looking for a perfect crab fly pattern that really takes Permit (much as the "Clouser" takes a variety of other saltwater game fish). The crab I caught the Permit on had a body about the size of a U.S. quarter(25 cent peice). I have found a pattern that incorporates a round quarter sized brown Velcro top and white Velcro bottom with rubber band legs( tied in a knot at the end) that point downward. Two melted black 40 lb. mono line tip pieces are used for eyes as well as two front "claws" made of wood duck flank.

I do not know the name of this pattern which closely resembles the crab I caught my Permit on. Does anyone know the name? Finally can anyone recommend a crab pattern that they have used with consistently good results for Permit?

Bob,

The pattern uses felt pads and is usually referred to as The Felt Crab, but is known under other names too.

Here's a pattern description:

As the Rockin' Crab:

I tied a few of those felt pad crabs myself, but never got anywhere near enough to a permit to test them.

Hope this helps.

Martin
