For Eastern Sierra tailwaters...and, a few "other" places...

Below the glacier at a pond along Big Pine Creek, Big Pine, CA...

Da' BOX...

RS-2 TUBE BROWN BAETIS, #20-#22…Rim Chung/Shane Stalcup/ PT…side view…

HOOK: TMC 200R, #20-#22

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Black

TAIL: Two Moose Body fibers (or black barbetts)

ABDOMEN: Micro Tubing, Brown

WING: Premium CDC, Medium Dun, (TroutHunter)

THORAX: Hare-Tron Dubbin, Dark Brown

GLASS BEAD: Diamond, Killer Caddis, 15/0, Midge

The RS-2, developed and designed by Rim Chung, is one of those must patterns for any fly box. It is like a Pheasant Tail or WD-40 when one needs useful Baetis/BWO patterns for Spring, Fall or anytime – anywhere…it JUST WORKS. This is a bit of a take off, with a micro tube abdomen and Glass Bead. The late Shane Stalcup has this pattern in his book, “Mayflies – Top to Bottom”. He uses partridge for legs…I started using this pattern long ago and used them exclusively (with glass beads),for two weeks, on the Madison River, at $3.00 Bridge – to test their effectiveness. They are machines…this variation may be tied in many colors using various shades of micro tubing, differing thread colors beneath the abdomen and fine dubbings…

PIB BAETIS…(“Paint It Black” – Baetis). #18…

HOOK: TMC 5262, #18

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Black

TAIL: Coq De Leon, Speckled Black

RIB: Lagartun Fine Wire, Violet

FLASH BACK: Mirage Opal Tinsel, SM

ABDOMEN: Micro Tubing, Black

WING CASE: Stalcup’s Flash Back, Black

THORAX: Ice Dub, UV Black

WING STUBS: Marc Petitjean Select CDC Feather Fibers, Lt. Mallow

BEAD: Black Tungsten

Late Fall and Winter Baetis/BWO’s come in darker shades, especially when they are about to “POP”…I have tied several variations on this theme for use in these conditions…

IRON LOTUS BWO/BAETIS…Egan…(Variant)…tilted view

HOOK: TMC 2488, #16-#20 or TMC 2487, Daiichi 1130

THREAD: Wapsi 70 Denier, Brown/Olive for abdomen

RIB: White, Uni, 6/0, twisted…cover abdomen with a coat of SHAN or Loon UV Knot Sense

WING CASE: Scud Back 1/8″ or strip of Black Thin Skin

HOT SPOT: Gordon Griffith 14/0, Red thread (Datum Glo-Brite works too!!!)

BEAD: Gold Tungsten, sized to hook

What else needs to be said…It is a Lance Egan pattern…

B’s “BLACK MAMBA” Winter BAETIS…#20…

HOOK: TMC 100SPBL, #20

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Black

TAIL: Soft Hen Hackle Saddle, Black

RIB: Midge Rainbow Flash (Cascade Crest)…coat abdomen with SHAN

THORAX: Purple UV Ice Dub

LEGS: Midge Flash, Black

BEAD: Silver Brass or Tungsten, 5/64″

The anti-“Silver Streak” and because, down deep, on the East Walker River this pattern will slay ‘em…“B” would be me…

6X EMERGER (Baetis) – Variant…Clayton Molinero…

HOOK: TMC 3761, #18 or TMC 2487, Daiichii 1130, #18

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0 Black or Brown

RIB: X-SM gold or copper wire

ABDOMEN: Pheasant Tail Fibers

WING: White Zelon

THORAX: Peacock Herl..or, in this instance - Dyed Purple, Iridescent Peacock Herl… (Hence variant)

An older pattern that has caught more that its’ fair share of Trout in the Yellowstone area…revived by Craig Matthews and BRF

KG’s Halfback/Foamback BAETIS – (Variant)…Tilted view…

HOOK: Daiichi 1130, #18-#22

THREAD: Body – Wapsi Ultra 70 Denier, Brown

THREAD: Thorax forward – Tiemco 16/0 Brown

TAIL / SHUCK: Amber Sparkle Emerger Yarn

RIB: Wapsi wire, x-SM, Chartreuse

ABDOMEN: Tying thread

THORAX: UV Ice Dub, Brown

WING CASE: Electronics packing foam

LEGS: Midge Flash, Black

KG would be Kelly Glissmeyer. This is a good one that I have, as usual, tweaked a bit…the addition of the MF legs and sparkle emerger yarn shuck…(Kelly uses Zelon). A little dumpster diving will provide a wealth of that electronics packing foam, which has numerous applications…This fly works most excellent as a trailer, just below the surface film…

TOO BLUE BAETIS EMERGER…Tilted View…

HOOK: TMC 101, #18-#22

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Gray

TAIL / SHUCK: Blue Zelon

ABDOMEN: Royal Blue Krystal Flash

RIB: X-SM Wapsi wire, Silver

WING CASE: Larva Lace, Floss, Blue

THORAX: UV Ice DUB, Dun

LEGS: Fluoro Fiber, Black

Since my experience with the “Palinista” Midge on the East Walker River, I decided to come up with a ridiculously Blue Baetis nymph for my son Michael…I can’t wait to see what inhales this…

BROWN MONO BAETIS (Variant) – OLSON…

HOOK: Daiichi 1130, #16-#20

THREAD: Abdomen – Waspsi Ultra 70 denier, Tan

THREAD: Thorax forward – Tiemco 16/0, Brown

TAIL: Lemon Wood Duck Fibers

OVER ABDOMEN: 5x Mono

WING CASE: Purple Flexi Floss

THORAX: Nature’s Spirit Fine Natural Dubbing #8, Brown Olive

LEGS: Lemon Wood Duck Fibers

Another interesting pattern out of the BIG R Fly Shop in Great Falls, MT…I tweaketh…

BROWN BAETIS DRY EMERGER…Schmidt / Variant…tilted view…

HOOK: Daiichi 1100, #20-#22
THREAD: Tiemco, 16/0, Olive
TAIL: Partridge Fibers
ABDOMEN: Nature’s Spirit, Brown/Olive # 8. – Dubbing…I used a dubbing loop for segmentation
THORAX: Nature’s Spirit Emergence Dub., Rusty Olive # 82.
UNDER WING: Mottled CDC, Med. Dun
OVER WING: Partridge

This is a Pat Dorsey find from Blue Quill Angler…Tweaked it a bit for the Eastern Sierras…and in particular, for the Lower Owens River...

FLUORO KF BAETIS NYMPH…tilted view…Schollmeyer

HOOK: Gamakatsu R10-B (Retainer Bend, Barbless), #16-#18
THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Black
TAIL: Hen Saddle Patch Fibers, Black
ABDOMEN: 2-4 Strands, Black Krystal Flash
THORAX: Nature’s Spirit Fine natural Dubbing, # 8. – Brown Olive
WING CASE: 6-8 Strands, Black Krystal Flash
LEGS: Fluoro Fibre ( Slinky- Gliss’n Glow)

A simple tie on some hooks I have been wanting to try out. Jim Schollmeyer developed this pattern. I have changed the hook and added Fluoro Fiber legs. A nice, slender little Baetis nymph…

BROWN BAETIS EMERGER …WIKE / Variant…

HOOK: TMC 100 SPBL #18-#20
THREAD: Abdomen, Wapsi 70 denier, Brown
THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Black
TAIL: Coq De Leon, Medium, Speckled
FLASHBACK: Holographic Mylar Motion 1/64″. Black, (Spirit River)
RIB: Wapsi Ultra Wire, x-sm, Black
THORAX: Ice Dub, UV Brown
BUDDING WINGS: Mottled CDC, Medium Dun, (Nature’s Spirit)
WINGCASE: Scud Back, 1/8″, Black
BEAD: Tung., Black, sized to hook

I have been wanting to tie this pattern up for a year…a good Montana Baetis pattern from those guys at the Big R Fly Shop – again…of course, I NEVER leave well enough alone…

HIGA’S SOS BAETIS – Variant…

HOOK: Daiichi 1130, TMC 2487, Mustad C49s, #16-#20

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Black

TAIL: Soft hen hackle fibers, Black

RIB: Wapsi wire, X-SM

FLASH BACK: Holographic Mylar Motion, Red, 1/64″

ABDOMEN: Black Pheasant Tail Fibers

WING CASE: Red Super Floss, Larva Lace

THORAX: Arizona Simi Seal, Black / Blue #21

LEGS: Red Krystal Flask

BEAD: Silver Tungsten, sized to hook

I first saw this pattern over on Gary Muncy’s BLOG (SwittersB) about a year ago and wanted to tie some up…the pattern was originated by Spencer Higa...

I think these might just keep my son Michael...busy...
