Patagonia based photographer Isaias Nicolaevici has been fly-fishing since he was a boy and taking pictures for almost as long.
Walk the walk
How did you start photographing - and what made you choose fishing related photos in particular?
How did I start? I actually started in the Caribbean, nothing about fishing. Of course I fly fished before, ever since I was a kid, but it was where I took my first steps in photography, having some workshops, classes, working on it and learning.
After a year of very intense full time dedication, I moved back to Patagonia where I have lived since 1993.
I worked with some other photographers like Eliseo Miciu - my brother who has been in photography since 20 ago, Marcos Furer who is a great artist, kind of a mentor to me, The Ribeiro who had a workshop with him and spent some time shooting together.
After all this I started focusing in fly fishing because it is something I've always been loving - since I was very young. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to end up photographing fly fishing but I had to wait for the right moment, and I needed to have some photography skills first.
Do you have a particular subject, region or a style of pictures that you mainly shoot or are you more all-round?
Since I do live in Northern Patagonia, I usually spend all summer shooting fresh water trout fishing, which is actually very good in this area. Then in our winter I usually travel around to other fishing places such as dorado or Atlantic salmon destinations... it is a season I mix it with the hunting since I do also shoot hunting.
Where are your photos used? Books, magazines, brochures, ads, web sites, prints, gallery exhibits or other places?
You'll see some of my work in many brochures, like for lodges, fishing destinations, outfitters (some of them from here, others international operations such as Trek, Frontiers, and Yellow Dog...)
Then what I usually do is offer a very special photography service at some selected lodges to design personalized limited edition books for the anglers.
I also sell some photo essays to magazines like Gray's, The Contemporary Sportsman, Catch Magazine, H2O Magazine and others...
Is photography your main source of income - if at all a source of income - and do you do other jobs as a supplement?
Yes, thank God it is my main and only source of income! It was not easy to get started, but I always preferred to dedicate full time to this, to do my best and try to improve myself every day!
Can people buy your pictures and if so, then in which form and where?
I used to print fine art quality prints of my best photos, but I haven't had time enough lately for this.
Today I offer a very unique service, which is to personalize every photo to my clients. Of course here in northern Patagonia all summer long, I also travel with groups of anglers to different fishing destinations and cover the whole group experience, and create a personal book telling the story with photographs.

Where do you currently live and work?
As I mentioned before, I live in northern Patagonia in a town called San Martin de los Andes.
What's in your bag? Preferred cameras, bodies, lenses and other gear?
This job demands a lot, and has a high risk of loosing gear always being in rivers, mountains, rocks... So I have to renew my gear permanently because I loose bodies and lenses quite often.
