The video formerly known as...
I attended the sneak preview of the video Only the River Knows, formerly known as The Trout Also Rises. Great video! I'm looking forward to reviewing the DVD.
I have covered this project run by Danish Peter Andreas Christensen and Swedish Rolf Nylinder before. A month ago I talked to Peter about the video and urged you to support its campaign on the crowdsourcing site IndieGoGo. The guys managed to get together the almost 10,000 USD they needed and tonight I managed to get to see the result.
Peter and Rolf had invited a bunch of people to a bar in the meat district in central Copenhagen where they screened the video. And even though the bar was crammed and crowded and the screen small and the sound was terrible, I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this is actually a very good video!
It's a fly-fishing video and it has lots of fishing and catching, but it also has something else, which is not seen that often in fly-fishing videos: a story, a narrative. It's fiction, but still a documentary, maybe more like a mockumentary where there's a script and roles. Most people play themselves, and many Scandinavians will probably recognize the renown Norwegian couple Bård Tufte Johansen and Lars Lenth who play a central role, while Peter himself and Mikkel Poppelhøj, who plays a young Lars Lenth, are known from the excellent pike video A Backyard in Nowhere. Rolf Nylinder, who is sort of the main character (also playing himself) is known from numerous activities online and off.
Beautifully filmed in Sweden, Norway, Australia and not least New Zealand, and very well produced, it tells a really great story and manages to combine a fascination of fly-fishing and some really fun half improvised and half scripted dialogue on top of some stunningly beautiful video footage, which seemed to appeal to both the fishing crowd and the not-so-fishing crowd (read: female) tonight.
This is a video that I really look forward to seeing again and reviewing here on GFF.
