Gierach Special

The Gierach Special is an effective trout fly designed by noted fly fishing author John Gierach. The fly began as a smaller (#10/12) fly tied to target bluegills and rock bass. Gierach later tied the fly on longer hooks in order to target trout. He gave the pattern the moniker of Squirrel Tail. It was his nephew who coined the Gierach Special title for the fly when he asked to borrow a few of the flies.

This little minnow pattern is a wonderful fly and when it gets wet it really comes alive. You can tie this fly pattern without the eyes, but I really feel the eyes give it another level of realism that predator species will find hard to pass up.

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
