Prey: Colombian Carlos Heinsohn ties a neat baitfish pattern made of synthetic fibers. It's a tough fly with nice movement designed for any predator which feeds on smaller fish. The pattern is more a tying principle than a specific pattern.

Clouser Deep Minnow

Bucktail: Only a few patterns are as generally useful and widespread as the Clouser Deep Minnow. Only a few patterns have their own entry in Wikipedia, but the Clouser Deep Minnow is up there with the Woolly Bugger, the Muddler Minnow, Grey Ghost, Royal Coachman, Diawl Bach and a few others.

Grrrrr: Kelly Galloup's Zoo Cougar is a pattern with some years on its back, but Martin recently discovered and started tying this staple big trout streamer. Large fly, goudy colors, deer hair! Just his kind of fly.

The Clouserish

Not quite: Very inspired by the Clouser style as well as the Thunder Creek, but not tied quite as any of the originals. The Clouser-ish will still go in the Clouser Deep Minnow category, and as all these flies it's an excellent and easy-to-tie fly.

Materials

Hook TMC 8089, Size 2. I use the model with the nickel finish.
Thread Nylon
Eyes Bead chain
Wing Two colours of bucktail, six strings of crystal flash
Body Mylar tubing

Tying instructions

Place the hook into the vice and put some glue/varnish on the hook shank.
Cut off a piece of mylar tubing, matching the length of the hook shank. Place the piece of tube over the shank, and fasten it to the end of the hook, by winding the nylon thread a few times around the shank and secure it with a whip finish knot.
Bind the mylar tubing behind the hookeye, leaving enough space to able to fasten the remaining materials.
Put the eyes on and secure with varnish or superglue.
Turn the hook upside down and tie in a small bundle of bucktail (the light colour) and secure with varnish.
Tie in six strings of pearl crystal flash and secure with varnish.
Tie in another bundle of bucktail (dark colour) and secure with varnish.
Tie off with a whip finish knot and secure with varnish again.
