Proven Patterns
By Barry Ord Clarke
The concept of small booklets with patterns has been seen before, and offers a quick overview over a small number of patterns in a small handy and not least inexpensive format. Barry Ord Clarke's first three booklets offer 10-15 patterns, some with detailed step-by-step pictures and some just with a single image or two, a materials list and tying instructions. The pictures are very high quality and the average quality of the booklets is equally high. The price is about 4 UKŁ or 6 US$ per book, which is a very low price for a book, but not dirt cheap when you consider that you get about 35 pages in a very small format. Still some very accessible books, which are perfect for beginning fly tyers. More titles are underway with more salmon flies, bass flies, carp flies an many more.

Action and conservation, displaying some thrilling dry fly fishing for steelhead (with dead drifted green drakes!), but also airing the concern that many anglers have for this magnificent fish. Chaotic trip and video, but certainly entertaining.

Atkinson's photos are all over the place: in magazines, in catalogs, in books, online and offline. That means that we have seen a lot of them already, and I have been disappointed before when buying Atkinson books. But this one features a lot of images that I haven't seen before as well as stories in the usual R. Valentine Atkinson style: written by mainly well-known fly anglers.

If you have plans to go to New Zealand or just want a confirmation that New Zealand is a worthwhile destination to put on your list of places to fish before you lay down your rods, this is a DVD you want to watch. It's some years old, and not quite up to today's standards, but it has an amazing running time of three hours and a very systematic coverage of both well known and lesser know locations, offering a very thorough coverage and a mouth wetting appetizer for anyone with NZ dreams.

A nice intro to tying bass bugs, but not exactly impressing. It does contain some good tips, but dull B/W print and small page count disappoints me in this book on one of my favtorite fly-tying subjects: tying with deer hair.

Trout at Ten Thousand Feet
By John Bailey
This book starts with the lines: "If you're even thinking of embarking on the life of a traveller - an angling traveller or not makes not a jot of difference - there are plenty of things to get straight in your head." and tells about the travels and fishing experiences of the author in an entertaining, humorous way, easy to read and illustrated with nice little B/W vignettes.
This is a 10-year old book, which must be bought used and is no longer listed on the publisher's site, but still well worth the used price, which typically starts as low as 5 US$ in spite of the 20 US$ cover price.

Trout of the World
By James Prosek
A stunningly beautiful and fascinating book in spite of its extremely simple concept: paint a picture of each of as many trout species and variations as possible. Simple images: a fish flat on its side on white background. But Prosek's fabulous style and the sheer number and variations is enough to spellbind.

Portraits of a Fly-Fishing Landscape
By John Juracek
I bought this book based on the cover and imagined a nice, large coffee table book with a wealth of gorgeous pictures. A used price of well above 30 UKŁ or 50 US$ indicated the same. But my disappointment was big when I saw the book. The images are gorgeous alright, but the book is a small and thin paperback without the least coffee table effect. I could of course have looked at the physical description of the book: 64 pages and a modest size of 22*16 centimeters or 8˝ by 6 inches.
Considering the price, that's a VERY expensive book, and not at all what I imagined - even though the images ARE beautiful.

Beautiful flies, beautiful pictures. Classic salmon flies at their best.
The intro shows some general guidelines for tying well shaped and proportioned full dressed flies. The main section is a bunch of stunning flies with large and detailed pictures and materials lists and the last part is a excellent and very thorough coverage of hook choices for these large classics.

This is a fly tying book from 1995 and that's pretty obvious when you run through it. Simple in scope, plain and fairly boring plates of a bunch of flies accompanied by a pattern description with materials listings. Not much new, and not much to be excited about.
