The Cone Head Tube Fly

A brand new way of tying tube flies

By Oivind Urkedal

This version of the Cone Head is especially well for night fishing.
I tie it with a longer and thicker wing and use marabou as overwing. I also dub the head with marabou fibres. This gives the fly a nice silhouette. On this version I have used a nickel cone head.

Pattern:
Tube: 3 cm or 1 1/4", nickel cone head
Butt: Three turns with oval silver tinsel
Body: Black or charcoal floss
Rib:Oval silver tinsel
Underwing: Black fox 2.5 to 3 times the tube lenght. A couple of strands of flash.
Overwing: Black marabou 3 times the body length

Dub the head with marabou fibres
Whip finish at least two times.
I don't varnish this fly because it will ruin the marabou dubbing, but I use a drop of superglue to fix the thread.

Tube Tying Techniques

Have tube, will tie... but how to go about it? How do you actually manage to tie on a tube? Well, it's much like tying on a hook, just different. Learn to tie on plastic, metal, bottles, compound and rear tubes.

Styles and Patterns

Tube flies - like most other fly types - come in as many shapes and styles as you can imagine. This article merely scratches the surface in an attempt to list some of them. I also touches upon a few aspects of tying one tubes.

Thin Blue Lines

Lithuania's 758 rivers, streams, and brooks cut like thin blue lines across the map offering a wealth of fishing opportunities. British Ripley Davenport married a Lithuanian girl and this opened his eyes to the Blatic state's potential.

The Barbell Tube

Steve Egge has been spending some time lately playing at the vise with some interesting bottle tubes. Here is his latest, which shows how varied you can be with tube tying. Tying behind the tube, on the tube body and in front of the tube.
