Atlantic Salmon Conversions

A Feature by Bob Skehan describing the conversion of Classic Atlantic Salmon patterns to New England Streamers

By Bob Raske Skehan

Several years ago, our web host, Bob Skehan, published a feature of flies where he converted traditional salmon flies to featherwing stream form. A few years later, on our little streamers@ discussion list, the guys got to talking and decided to do something similar, only this time instead of featherwing streamers, we would tie the flies as little bucktails. So - there you have it - a feature of atlantic salmon patterns tied in "trout bucktail" form.

Never have liked long hooks like these. Gives a fish too much leverage and losses are higher than with hooks like the TMC 200R for ex.

Google "Nail Spoon flies". there was an article in the summer '98 Fly Tier Magazine

It shows how to tie spoon style flies using fake finger nails
