RK's Variant Sculpin

The Variant Sculpin is a pattern I designed with inspiration from many different patterns such as the "Sculpzilla" and the "Slumpbuster". This particular fly is tied on an AFF S403 (Down-eye, 3x-long, round-bend, streamer hook) by Allen Fly Fishing. AFF has a great selection of hooks, beads and much more. Check them out at

I find the variant color of this pattern to be very effective for the rivers I fish in Colorado and Utah. Especially the Green River below flaming gorge reservoir. Many effective streamer patterns on this stretch are ginger in color due to the sandy and light colored bottom of the river. This pattern sinks extremely fast and has "life-like" movement in the water. You can either fish this fly in a dead drift or strip it, both are effective. The big boys and girls will notice this fly. You've been warned!
