General Practitioner

The General Practitioner is a staple fly pattern for salmon and steelhead anglers who fish the west coast PNW rivers. The fly was designed by English angler Col. Desmond Drury in the early 1950's for fishing Atlantic Salmon. The fly found favor on the west coast and is now a staple in many fly boxes. There are many ways to tie this pattern, but this is my preferred way.

For the tail (or feelers/mouthparts/antennae) I use bucktail, but you could use other hairs like polar bear (my favorite), calf tail, yak hair, Polar pony, or fox hair. Many versions also include a collar of hackle or Guinea fowl.

The fly may be tied in many colors. I prefer to add a little black into the orange version and dark versions I add red or orange. For hackle, I use a badger, grizzly or black laced white hackle dyed orange to give the fly a little variegation.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
