Casting accuracy with nymphs

Have you ever wondered why some fly fishers are so much more effective when fishing with nymphs?
When fishing with nymphs, the number ONE factor to consider is casting accuracy. As some fish hold in little pockets, other fish slightly beneath a rock, others in a micro current and others again will be in a little back eddy.
The difference between success and nothing will sometimes be a couple of centimeters. A lot of fish will have such a perfect spot they almost do not have to move to get food. The food washes into their mouths.
So they will not move the extra couple of centimeters to “fetch” your nymph if it is too far away. And a nymph that is right in front of its mouth, it will snap and eat it immediately.

To improve your nymph casting accuracy, place a target about 3 rod lengths ahead of you, something that is not bigger than 30 centimeters or 12 inches in diameter. Take your leader and fly line out and place the nymph inside the target.
Keep rod, line, leader and nymph all in straight line. Lift up in the exact same straight line into the back cast and then bring the forward cast in the exact same straight line. Your fly should land in the exact same spot. Repeat 10 times.
Now slowly move the target 30 or 40 centimeters or 12-15 inches to either side and repeat 10 times.
Eventually your accuracy will be so great that you can hit the target 8 out of 10 times with ease. And you will be able to cast to each one only once moving to the next target.
