The Schroeder's Parachute Caddis is a caddis fly that utilizes a parachute to float. If you have been fly fishing for a while, you know how effective parachute flies are. In fact the most popular dry fly currently is the Parachute Adams, which represents a mayfly. In fact most of the parachute flies represent mayflies, hoppers or ants. But for some reason, caddis parachutes are limited. There are a few out there, but not many. This Schroeders parachute caddis is one of them, and in my opinion is one of the best dry flies to use when fishing small caddis hatches. They represent a caddis very well, and are fairly easy to tie. In fact, these are one of the easiest parachute flies ive ever tied. Once you get the hang of making those wings that is.
Yes the wings can be tricky, but like I said, when you get the hang of them, they can actually be very easy to create. And you can pre-make a bunch of wings, getting them ready for your fly ahead of time. I can usually make 10 wings in just a few minutes, then it's a matter of just whipping these parachutes together.
The parachute material I used was calf body hair, which is naturally buoyant, and a really good natural material to make parachutes out of. However it does add a few extra steps, and is not as easy to work with as some synthetic options like para post or poly yarn. So I highly recommend using a synthetic post material. They are more stiff, less expensive, and much quicker to work with. Simply cut off the amount you need and tie it directly in, then trim the top to your desired length. No need to stack it to align the tips. Now It does not come out looking quite as nice, but the fish do not care. You will catch just as many fish with the synthetic as the natural. When prepping multiple wings, and using synthetic post material, I can usually tie a couple dozen of these in an hour, making these very quick to fill a box with caddis dry flies.
As Ive already said, parachute flies are extremely popular and effective. The way they sit on top of the water pushes that body a bit further down into the water film, making it more visible to the fish. Almost like a struggling caddis trying not to sink. However the fly is also very visible to the fisherman, as that bright white or whatever color post you choose is sitting up like an indicator above the water surface. You can see exactly where your fly is, so you will miss less strikes.
