Only the River Knows The Trout Also Rises

Another crowdsourced video is emerging, and we at GFF think it deserves some support, so we call upon the GFF army to chip in and get some nice perks.

The video title has been changed to "Only the River Knows"

The names Peter Andreas Christensen and Rolf Nylinder may not ring lots of bells with most of you, but if I in stead mention A Backyard in Nowhere or FrontSideFlyfishing it may help.
Peter was one of the anglers who went to Alaska to fish for pike and got so much more, all documented on the fabulous DVD from Innoko and our interview with the filmmakers, and Rolf is one of the loony Swedes behind FsFly, one of the more entertaining fly-fishing sites on the web - not least thanks to their sometimes hilarious videos.

Budget

1200$ : Sound design
1200$ : Graphic design, poster/dvd/web
700$ : DVD authoring and conversion
2500$ : DVD publishing

4200$ : Music licensing
9800$

New project

These two guys have pooled their resources and are now working on a new video project called The Trout Also Rises.
As their budget shows it's not free to produce such a DVD. The music licenses will set them back 4,200 USD! It's the single most expensive part of the production, which will cost them close to 10,000 USD, and that probably doesn't pay anything but the direct costs. Think of time spent filming, traveling, editing and working on PR and marketing and much more. I can't imagine that these guys get any of that covered even if the DVD sells well.

A short interview

I talked shortly to Danish Peter Christensen, one of the filmmakers, and he says:
- As you say, it is tough to make fly fishing films, maybe even more so for a movie-length documentary like The Trout Also Rises. We have worked full time for 8 months on this project and put everything we own into the production, so it has been really, really nice to feel a strong and generous support from fly fishers all over the world on our IndieGoGo campaign.

The funding has just crossed the 9,000 dollar limit as this is written, and is in other words closer to reach its target og 9,800 USD.
Peter says:
- Now we are very close to reaching our goal in more than once sense. We nearly have the funding to pay for all the production expenses so the documentary can actually be printed, but we are also very close to a final cut - just a couple of weeks' work left.

There's a short week left to contribute, so click your way on to IndieGoGo and spend a few dollars. For only 35 USD (45 if you are in Europe) you not only support the project, but also get a DVD when its done, and there are more options and more perks to be had if you want to spend more.

Regarding the style of the video, Peter confirms what can you already sense from the intro and what you'd guess from Peter and Rolf's backgrounds:
- The Trout Also Rises will be some of what people already know from FsFly and A Backyard in Nowhere, but we feel we have stepped up our game, especially due to a kind benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, but is a well known US actor and director. He offered to let us work with his team of cinematographers for three weeks on location in New Zealand and their footage is some of the best trout footage ever made I think.. Without their professional effort and impressive craftsmanship, we would never have been able to adapt Lars Lenth's first piece of fly fishing literature - the journal from New Zealand, for the big screen.

Peter closes by saying:
- It has been an incredible journey to make this film and I could go on forever, but I'll finish by saying that we really look forward to showing The Trout Also Rises to the world in early November and if you wish to support us, every penny will go into making this movie as good as possible. We really appreciate every donation tremendously!

Until the release you can enjoy the IndieGoGo teaser above and of course you have a few days more to support the project.

The trout... - ...also rises?

I think the fellows ...

I think the fellows that run the Fly Fishing Film Festival have a granting process in which they help fund various projects as I recall. Also Winston had a competition for completed films. You can also get sponsors for gear. I don't know if any of that helps but it is a start.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
