The Quill Gordon is one of the most important dry flies in American fly fishing history. Developed by Theodore Gordon in the late 1800’s, this elegant Catskill-style dry fly helped shape generations of traditional trout patterns that followed.
Known for its slender quill body, upright divided wings, and clean proportions, the Quill Gordon, and other catskill style dry flies, remain as one of the most iconic traditional dry flies ever created. Over 100 years later, it still continues to fool trout and influence modern dry fly tying.
In this step-by-step fly tying tutorial, I’ll show you how I tie the Quill Gordon using stripped peacock quill, divided wings, and classic dry fly proportions to create a clean and durable version of this historic pattern.
I also go over a few small modern adjustments I like to make while still keeping the original spirit and appearance of the fly intact.
