Then I found this site and combined the information from both to make mono furled leaders that worked very well for me.
However, I have an inquistive mind and wanted to know why and how for the tapers and why a certain taper works so I searched more and found the Furled Leader Probooards where there is a spreadsheet that calculates the taper for any weight fly line and leader length you want

This I found to be just what I wanted. I am not an Excel wizard by any means but this is easy to use and works very well. In the end you probably only need two or three furled leader lengths for each rod weight you have but you can sort out loops and tapers then print or write it down for future reference.
The spreadsheet also includes mono and thread with diameters and breaking strenghts so it is a wealth of information.

I think this is a fantastic resource regardless or how you make your leaders.
