Very well written and informative - makes me want to have a go at building my own and for a fishing buddy.

I would like to build a one-piece 5-6 foot stick for 2-3-4 weight lines for our small overgrown trout streams in the south of Western Australia. Would the same methods apply to single piece rods? What about purchased forms - can they cope with 5-6 foot single lengths or would you have to make purpose-built forms for this?

I can see potential problems (and costs) with our Customs agencies when trying to import bamboo into our country. Do you know of anyone who already imports bamboo into Australia from Demarest ?

Now I am able to tailor my leaders to my personal casting requirements.

Hi Martin, I saw this DVD a couple of weeks before and I absolutly agree with you. It seems to be not so difficult to catch any mullet according to this DVD but reality is different. The DVD is well made and I would recommend it. BTW a friend of mine caught a 62cm long mullet on Fyn a couple of days before:-)

The costs

The costs run something like just under $500 U.S./day, but that is inclusive of - 3 meals and lodging, transportation to and from airport, guide, boats, laundry. The food is good, the drinking water is fine - I think it's well water. All food and drink is included. Flies, rods, waders, etc - i.e. personal stuff is not included, although if you break a rod (as I did) I think they've got a few they can lend you.

There didn't seem to be any kind of civil strife or concerns in the area, and the locals are extremely friendly and sincere.

I think the round trip airfare from most U.S. locations to Buenos Aires is around $1200 unless you get a deal. From there you fly out of the domestic airport to Bariloche, and I'm not sure what that round trip air fare is.

San Carlos de Bariloche is the nearest town of any size and it's kind of like Bend, Oregon, if you're familiar - a decent-sized outdoor tourest town with a mixture of Spanish/Latin and German/Swiss flavor. There are local artists both of native art and landscape type painters, but I was there to fish - so didn't spend much time looking. The landscape is stunning, and there are lots of trails (and they have very gentle horses if that's your thing). The lodge is not that high in elevation - something aroun 4,000 ft. above sea level - no altitude sickness or oxygen issues. The rivers range from slow-rolling to whitewater - if kayaking is your thing. The lodge is an hour and a half from Bariloche and it pretty much in the middle of nowhere as far as commercial places like galleries, stores, etc. The town of Lago Hess (where the lodge is located) is just a handful of farmhouses and ranches.

Feel free to contact them - it's their off season, so they might be on vacation, but they're good folks.

I love your web page but I noticed an error in your description of the "Surf Candy". This may go in the category of " who cares..." but it is an error nontheless. You state that the fly's origin date is 1997 and it is not. I own a framed (in shadow box and signed by Popovich on the card he gave me which is at the base of that mounted fly) "Surf Candy" tied by Popovich himself in front of me at the East Coast Fly Fishing Symposium held at Seven Springs Resort in Pennsylvania in April of 1992. In addition the fly is largely of the same construction and is essentially a color variation of a "Sea Candy" which made its published appearance in "American Angler and Fly Tyer" in 1990. This is not meant as an attack by any means on you or your web page - I enjoy your format and keep your web site as a reference for myself. I have been a fly tyer for the past 42 years and wish to say that you put out quality work. I just thought you might want to take note of the error.

Shenandoah National Park is

Shenandoah National Park is in Virginia. It is over 200,000 acres and has more than ninty trout streams, thirty of which are managed. I have caught an 11 1/2 inch Brook Trout in the park. There are a lot of skeptics even for that size fish. I know of a few in the 12-13 inch range that have been caught, but that is the limit. If you catch one that size you better take its picture with a ruler by its side. It is hard to believe that in eastern Canada they have been caught up to 14 pounds.
