You asked me about designing a simple drag system for the future in my reels. I am thinking about it and maybe in a future reel design I will build such a drag system in one of my reels. I am thinking of a little disc brake system.

I tie some big flies myself for peacock and specially for payara. Its incredible how Little info on tying big, large yet light flies is there around the web. It is still a weird thing for people when I show them a 12" fly and I tell them I cast it with an 8 weight rod.
Hi Martin, Jeez, what a shock! I didn't know until I walked through the Danish fly fair article and I see something very unfamiliar. Man it must be more than 20 years we met in a get together somewhere in Ulm (Germany) together with some other weirdo's (incl. Hans) trying to fish in mid winter! After tying at two Danish fly fair in the early 1990's I stopped tying at shows and also lost contact with nearly all friends & tiers. Hold on Martin. All the best wishes my old friend. Jay
It's a nicely tied pattern. My understanding was that the pattern was originated by Charles Waterman during a botched attempt to tie a Silver Doctor. He tied the fly in the Brooks "blonde style" as shown with all the materials above the shank with no beard or belly. In an article authored by Waterman quite long ago (like 20 years or more) in some fishing rag, he noted he chucked the streamer for brown trout in Montana. He used shooting heads as I recall. That is the first recollection I have of a reference to the pattern. My own experience is that it is indeed effective on trout and almost everything else.

I've used Corel Draw and Corel Paint to make some eyes. You can print them into any color combination you want, then punch them out into whatever size punch you are using. They come out of the printer dry. I've also used Corel Draw to elongate the center of the eye so that it's not circular. Then finish with Loons UV resin. I've been successful using a thin self adhesive sheet to print on. A little artistic flavor doesn't hurt either. Good luck with your creative endeavor.

I've enjoyed looking over your flies in this and other articles on here. Can't quite figure out the benefit of the disc at the rear of the tube? Surely any turbulance created from the front disc is enough to move the materials? Is the rear disc simply holding up the wing a little higher than a bead or cone or dubbing knot would?
Also I have seen a pattern of yours elsewhere which incorporates a disc the wrong way round at the rear to slow the swing in cold water by acting as a brake of sorts. How effective have you found this and have your tried more than one backward facing disc to add to that braking effect???
Love the website and this article. I truly want to try the Easy Shrimp Eyes on some patterns for inshore FF in South Carolina. I read that you will get further out in Europe and the rest of the world "when the time is right". Any ideas when that might be the case for the US?

Great website! I come from a long line of river and ocean fishermen/women. However, my grandparents on both sides passed away before teaching me anything about it. I tried lake fishing once in my 20's (caught a large mouth bass) and found it to be very upsetting because I was totally unprepared emotionally and I didn't effectively put the fish out of its misery. I was a bad hunter that day and totally uninformed! So fast forward 20'something years, and here I am with a 5 year old son who asks me every week to take him fishing. What to do!
I personally don't believe in hunting/fishing for sport and entertainment. That said, I'm not a vegetarian and I'm ok with killing to eat as long as suffering is avoided. I'm also totally open to allowing my son the chance to make up his own mind about fishing. So I was grateful to find your website and read through your philosophies. I've printed your 10 Rules for Catching, Killing and Releasing and will help him understand his options. I appreciate the gray-zone thinking you've done here, allowing space for everyone to figure out where they stand. Kudos to you!

Hey Ben, Davie uses a L.A.W. vise. They are pretty hard to come by now as the gent who made them (Laurence A. Waldron) no longer produces them. They do come up on ebay every few months, but expect to pay upwards of $1000 for one.
I just stumbled over the last comment and like to mention that beside the named lodges the "Latitud Sur Anglers Camp" offers exceptional fishing as well. Not as boring as elsewhere close to the Barancoso, but technical with small nymphs and even dry's.
The german issue of "Patagonian salmonids" got an additional chapter were I wrote about the true history and how the ancestors of the "Strobel Steelheads" really found their way into the lake.
No legends and marketing bullshit, but facts.
