I can still remember the fist fish I caught on a streamer, a stocked brook trout on a Royal Coachman streamer. Since that time I have had success many times fishing these long flies. In my early days of fly fishing I bought all of my flies.
My love for streamers started when we took a vacation in Rangeley Maine back in the seventies. This area was a hot bed of streamer fly history and I wanted to know everything about it. I soon learned of the patterns from Maine as well as many of the other states in the northeast that also had their own streamer history.
I can still remember the fist fish I caught on a streamer, a stocked brook trout on a Royal Coachman streamer. Since that time I have had success many times fishing these long flies. In my early days of fly fishing I bought all of my flies, and it was only about the year 2000 that I started to tie these beautiful flies. They were a bit rough for sure but with lots of practice and some well recieved advise my work got so much better.
While I enjoy tying the classics I prefer to free style my streamers. I love the colors and materials available to tyers today and take full advantage of them in my streamers. While my love of fly fishing, which I do primarily on small streams, fishing for wild brook trout with dry flies. I always drift back to to those bright beautiful long flies that captured me back a long time ago.
