Gary's Biography

My name is Gary Fraser from Nova Scotia. Born in Rural Cape Breton I had the luxury of growing up with some of the finest trout and salmon fishing in the world on my doorstep. I am a father of two, an avid outdoorsman, guide and owner of nsflyfishing.com a website used with other guides and anglers to promote fly fishing and fly tying here in Atlantic Canada. I have had little time on the water the last number of years with a young family and working away but things are coming together for a great 2012 season. My kids are both fly fishing trout and tying flies with me now as they are getting older and we are all looking forward to the next season to open. In 2012 my son will be added as an angler to my salmon license and my goal will be for him to land his first Atlantic Salmon which will be the highlight of my season to say the least.

I was actually introduced to fishing at the age of five by my grandfather. After he passed away, a neighbor, John MacLeod taught me to fly fish at age ten and I have seldom used another method since. This led me to learning to tie my own flies at twelve and when I struggled I would go watch Rick MacDonald tying at a shop in Margaree . He would take the time to answer my questions and show me some tricks. Being from Cape Breton my heart belongs to the rivers there and luckily they still hold good populations of wild native brook trout and Atlantic Salmon. In the fall the colors of the mountains surrounding you makes the trip worth while making landing a fish a bonus to the trip.

I think one of the most addictive things in the sport of fly fishing and fly tying is the connection between others. In 30 yrs of fly fishing I have rarely heard negative comments to others on the river or at the bench. Most involved are only to happy to share with others and pass their knowledge along like all the talented folks involved with this project. Its nice to see any group pull together but I think credit should be made to Darren and all involved in this and I hope its nothing short of a success.
