Circus Peanut

No comments yet

The Circus Peanut is one of the flies to kick start our modern articulated streamer craze. This fly was created in the 90's and was one of the first articulated streamers. I honestly dont know which came first, Kelly Gallop's dungeon, or the Circus Peanut, but both of these flies were the grandfathers of today's articulated streamers. And they are still just as effective and popular today as they were in the 90's. I believe the circus peanut had more of a part in many other patterns. The original tier of this, Russ Madden has said he never stopped evolving his fly, and welcomes new materials and techniques in tying the circus peanut. And true to his word, his fly has very much evolved over the years. Spawning off new patterns, or just new ways of tying it. This circus peanut has variations that really change how it's fished and how it looks. I believe more medium to large articulated streamers have been created based off Russ Madden's Circus Peanut than any other fly out there.

No articulated streamers are quick or easy to tie, just the nature of them, they are like tying two separate flies. However, as articulated streamers go, the Circus Peanut is really not too difficult, especially if you use polar chenille rather than hackle. It also helps speed things up if you tie these in steps. Setting up an assembly line of sorts, tying a bunch of back tails (which are basically wooly buggers), then attaching them all to their front hook, then finishing up the front making a 3 step assembly line. This really does cut down on timing and I think makes it easier. I can actually tie up 6-7 an hour this way, which is extremely quick for an articulated streamer.

I highly recommend all streamer fisherman learn to tie this pattern. Buying articulated streamers in the shops is pricy, Ive seen shops sell these for $15 each! And considering these aren't too expensive in materials to tie yourself, and if you get good at tying them you can tie 5-10 an hour, why not save yourself a lot of money and tie them yourself. Even more of a benefit to tying them yourself is you can Taylor them to your own needs. Change up colors, materials, and sizes. Tie them to fit your own local waters.

Since you got this far …

A money box
The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
