Deceiver flies are one of the most popular and effective medium to large sized streamers. They work in a wide range of conditions and for a wide range of fish. The originator of this fly is Lefty Kreh, and he designed this in the 50's for fishing striped bass. However this soon gained popularity with fisherman going after all types of fish that eat baitfish. Some notable fish species are freshwater bass species like largemouth, smallmouth and striper, also large predatory trout as well. Not just for freshwater though, this fly really shines in saltwater. Fish like redfish, speckled trout, snook, and even tarpon for inshore fishing. Tuna, bonito, kingfish, jacks, and much more for offshore saltwater fishing. This fly works so well to represent a host of different baitfish species, which means any fish that eats baitfish will eat this deceiver fly.
The deceiver fly is also fairly easy to tie once you get the hang of them. I personally am not the most skilled in tying them, but I can still bust through 10 or more in an hour which is quite quick for large streamers. The material list is also small, and rather inexpensive. The most expensive material for this fly is probably either the hook or bucktail. However the fact that half of the fly uses white bucktail, you can pick up discount white bucktails for not a whole lot of money. Or if you hunt, just cut the tail off any deer you harvest. Unless your tying these in very large sizes, you dont need the fiber to be incredibly long, so no need to buy those large northern bucktails. Pick up a few colors of higher quality colored bucktail and use some discount white for the belly. The tails also dont need expensive hackle. In fact some of the best hackle are the Chinese or Indian strung saddles which is some of the least expensive hackle you can buy.
