Fur and hair from skin patches

Today it's about fur and hair from skin patches. Most small rodents, weasels, foxes, deer and many other animals have useable hair for fly tying. While most of us probably best knows the obvious candidates like deer hair, bucktail and squirrel tail, there is hundreds of other useful furs. You can buy these from your fly shop, but finding these materials at furriers and from hunters can be an interesting and cheap way to get top quality tying materials. And of cause, there is the roadkill option, which can be a bit messy.

A while back I received a package from our Canadian friend, Hank. Inside was a bunch of different patches of fur. Good pieces materials with fur left on the hide, which had been dried out with the addition of borax soap in order to preserve the material.

The cool thing about doing a material swap with a friend in another country is that things that might be common in, in this case, Canada, can be very exotic for a Scandinavian fly tier like me.

Today we dive into the box and check out some of the materials. Later on, I will tie a bunch of flies using these materials and a couple of dubbing techniques.

Thanks for watching :0)
Cheers, Ulla and Michael

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
