I read this article with interest as I'm just getting into fly-tying and I want to get started on the right track from the beginning. I just bought 3 Metz #1 Premium neck hackles (Grizzly, Brown and Light Blue Dun) at a great closing-out discount. My question is, do I need to go through the cleaning process with these necks, or are they considered to be adequately cleaned during the processing and packaging?

The full name...? In what way? The cape is a classical badger cape - the feathers have a black center and white rims. It's quite common and available from many breeders. This one is most likely from Whiting Farms where Ken is on the Pro Team.

I have no idea what you mean with "explain the old one differently". Which old one?

I don't understand

I don't understand a couple of things. One is the picture of the material, I need the full name of that hole cape, maybe this is full name, I don't know, I've never seen or known what that material is. Also could you explain the old one differently, maybe, I don''t quite get it and that is the way I want to tie one just to see how well it works, or show another of these doing that old pattern, please, any info is helpful.

Small trout streams

Usually fish small trout streams in Western Maryland,USA. Made this pattern a wet fly (small # 8) with hollographic tinsel and black ICE DUB instead of chinille. Worked well.

I've been having difficulty with signing a graphite rod that I've just made (have spent more time on the signature and data than it took to make the entire rod, ...pretty sad).
1. I was wondering how long it takes for the 'Gelly Roll' gold writing to dry enough so that it doesn't end up dissolving into the Krylon, or is this not an issue? I have tried using a PENTEL Hybrid K105x gold gel pen, but the ink didn't seem to dry enough. When I tried coating it with U40 Super Urethane I found that some of the gold emulsion dissolved into the urethane.
2. Have you ever tried spray-on polyurethane without the Krylon fixative? Do you know if this works?

I think that the absence of the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust link (www.tarbone.org) on this site is a tragic oversight. THe info on that site about biology and the state of the fishery is up to date and crucial for anyone who cares about these fish (all 8+ species of bonefish!).

if it cant be tied in 20 minutes or less.And is very stiff,I find realistics realistically wrong for fishing.I don't want to spend an hour or two tying a fly that i may lose in the stream,a tree,etc,where i could have tied a perfectly acceptable impressionistic fly that would catch more fish,not fisherman,and not care to lose,cause i could wrap one in no time.All that said your flies r beautiful and r very artistic.They should be displayed in a shadow box and take the impressionistics to the stream.

A trick

Hi
Although I'm only starting to tie Grey Fred, a trick I used with other flies was to put the KF in a loop of Uni Cord and twist it together. It makes a good rib and resists teeth well.
Tie in all 4 ends both kf and both ends of cord and twist that.
Looking forward to using Grey Fred for smallmouth bass.

Yes, Fredningsperiode is protected period.
Helårligt is all year.

And yes, the rule goes for colored fish in the protection period and fishing in and near the estuaries in the protected period for certain streams and all year for other streams - typically the larger ones.

Hope this clears things up.

Martin, thanks. You are absolutly right, I am really interested in sea trouts.

So according to your explanations, the below mentioned limitations mean:

Fredningsperiode:
Helårligt
- fishing is forbiden all the year in marked area (radius)

and

Fredningsperiode:
16. september - 15. januar
- fishing is permited all year, but all coloured fish caught in the mentioned period must be released.

I have problem with danish words Helårligt and Frednings :-) Periode would be probably the same as english period\ :-)
