Books on my horizon

These some books that I am reading right now, have ordered, or intend to acquire at the earliest opportunity.

I'm a book guy, and have my tentacles stretched out in constant search for new and interesting titles on the market. Sometimes the books come to me - like when authors or publishers poke me about new releases - while other books are brought to my attention by other anglers, through social media or simply because I browse book shops online and stumble upon them.

Here's a list of my most recent discoveries, which are all very likely to find a spot in my already way to crammed book shelves.

Chronicles of a Deeply Hooked Angler
By Stephen Sautner

This book was offered to me to review by the author, who generously mailed me a copy.

I’m currently working my way through it, and have to say that I’m very well entertained.

It consists of a large number of essays – some previously published and some new. It’s perfectly sized mouth bites, and one or a couple makes great bedtime reading. Sautner’s fishing is varied – fly and spin, lakes, ocean, streams – and his writing is sharp and witty.

Find the book here. It’s priced at 30 US$.

Source to City

By Nick Thomas

Any book by Nick Thomas immediately goes on my wish list. His writing and photography is really good, and in this particular title, he tells the story of the river Taff and how it changed from a heavily polluted and dead stream to an excellent fishing stream.

Judging from the images on Nick’s web site, it lives up to my expectations.

It’s more than 400 pages in almost A4 size, so it’s a hefty book, which is also reflected in the price, which is 50.- UK£ or close to 60 Euros or 70 US$.

No matter the price, it’s been ordered.

The Art of the Trout Fly

100 exquisite patterns
By Lucas Utrera

This seems to be quite a gorgeous book with some exquisite photography and some really nice flies. It’s written by Lucas Utrera, who – I have to admit – I had never heard of before I saw him post about the book on social media. Judging from the page samples on the publisher’s web site, it features flies originated and tied by the author, which sets it very much apart from Judith Dunham’s similarly titled classic from 1988.

Utrera’s book is available for pre-order, but won’t be available before September 2026.

At 25 US$ it seems like a very reasonably priced book.

Brian’s Fly Fisher’s Pocket Companion

Insect imitations of Dry, Wet and Hatching Flies
By Brian Hunt

Brian contacted me a while back inquiring about the possibilities of doing drawings based on some of the flies on GFF, and told me that they were going to be used in a book he was writing. The book is out now, and if the limited book preview and the few samples Brian sent me offers the result any justice, it will be a book worth owning, and it’s now on my list.

The book is priced at about 30 US$ for close to 250 pages in a 6x9 inches format paperback, and a copy has been ordered.

Microflies

Tying and fishing tiny flies
By Dave Southall

This is a recent book from Paul Morgan’s Coch-y-Bonddu Books, which normally guarantees a good quality book about an interesting subject.

I’m not particularly into tying or fishing small flies (even though I did tie a VERY small fly once), but the subject interests me as a fly tyer, and a long time ago I bought and reviewed Darrel Martin’s Micropatterns about the same subject.
That book was published in 1994, and an update on the subject seems very fitting. Much water has run under the bridge in the past 30 years, and it will be interesting to see how Dave Southall treats this subject.

The book will be out soon, and is UK£ 35.- from Coch-y-Bonddu in Wales.

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
