The Global FlyFisher
Simply the Best Place to go for Online Fly Fishing and Fly Tyinghttp://globalflyfisher.com/blog/essential-edwards
You can now enjoy Oliver Edwards' great videos, hang prints with his flies on the wall and even buy his patterns to fish with.
We have covered Oliver Edwards' book Flytyer's Masterclass the first time many years ago (17 actually!) when it was first published. An excellent book, which will teach you a lot of Oliver's techniques and help you tie his very realistically looking, yet very fishable flies.
British Mark Gardner company Silvery Ltd started making films with Oliver Edwards and published them as the Essential Skills series, where Edwards ties his flies in front of the camera, showing us step by step how to do, and then instructs us how to fish them out on the water.
This was followed by Essential Patterns that focuses on fly-tying, and now the product portfolio has been further expanded with flies and prints - and all the videos available on DVD of course, eight altogether, six in the Essential Skills series and two in the Essential Patterns series. Each is 15 £ or about 23 US$ or 19 Euros, and if you want them all it's 100 £/160 USD/125 Euros. Add to that 2-3 £ in postage for single DVD's or 3-8 £ for the set depending on your location.
The titles have changed slightly compared to when we reviewed them the first time (we refer to tapes and VCR's... them were the days!), but the quality of the content is equally good and of course the technical quality of the DVD's is much better than it was on the old VHS-tapes.
The fly selection is pretty impressive with dozens of both dries and wets available, and some of Edwards' signature flies in the bunch like the Heptagenid nymph, the Hydropsyche larva and the POPA Caddis. It is of course not Edwards himself who has tied them, but the samples I have seen are very well tied, and do live up to the highest expectations. The prices aren't exactly low, but on the other hand very reasonable when the complexity and quality of the flies is considered. You can buy sets of flies, where a selection of 7-9 flies has been boxed.
If you want an Edwards on your wall there is also a number of fine art prints available, each with a selection of flies drawn in great detail, and nicely printed.
