Atlantic Herring
The forums are very quiet
The Global FlyFisher forum has existed for almost as long as the site, and the oldest posts are more than 20 years old. Forums aren't what they used to be. Social media has taken over a lot of their roles, and the GFF forum is very quiet ... to put it mildly.
We keep everything online for the sake of history, and preserve the posts for as long as possible, but as you will see, quite a few of them aren't in a good shape, but rely on old images hosted elsewhere, which are no longer available, odd codes from old systems and much more, which can't be shown in a decent way.
But the posts are here, and you can - if you insist - start new threads and reply to old ones. But don't stay awake waiting for replies, because they are unfortunately few and far apart.

Hi Pete

Andy
So many Hooks...So little Time...
G'Day Andy...
The hook in the Dyna-King jaws is a Mustad Signature Series 4/0 Tarpon... (strong/heavy/durable)
The keel hook just prior to your inquiry is an Owner Cutting Point Rig'N Hook 5/0...(#5137-151) I fish it over estuary muscle beds and eel grass and congured up a snagless design.
Below is another more involved keel hook version on an Owner Cutting Point "Oversize Hook" 7/0 (#5110-171) Fished/drifted slowly on a floating line in low light during the Spring Herring estuary parade...

Bada BING... Bada BOOM...
Phinally got to where I was going...
When I get an idea, the initial notion will inevitably morph...
The end result is the product of manipulating material to arrive at a target compromise of shape, colour, and texture...
Sometimes the evolution comes together nicely in defined stages...
Being able to capture the image makes the R&D aspects more rewarding and much easier to share with friends in the tying community...

I don't fly fish in the sea
I don't fly fish in the sea much, but being an east coast Scot, I do know
something about herring. They were the staple diet of my ancestors for centuries.
Those look good enough to eat. 😄
That fish you caught looks a beauty.

Pete,
Nice fly! As always...
And now you're tying on a Norlander vice.
Like my Dutch friend Hans Weilenmann: a man of many vices!? ;-)

Norm and Ruthie [CEO & Chair-person of the Board] on tour...
This photo was taken just before the doors opened at the 2011 Somerset Fly Fishing Show in New Joizey last January...
I first met Norm and Ruthie way back in the late 80's at the Marlboro FF Show in Taxachusetts... the beginning of a genuine friendship...
My vise [at the time] was an HMH which served me very well and is still in my collection of venerable "kinetic sculptures"...
After watching Norm do his thing, I made the investment and I've never had any regrets...
The "Automatic Bobbin" completes the package and is brilliant phrosting on the cake!...
EVERY time I get to watch Norm, I ALWAYS learn a few more amazing tricks...
And I ALWAYS enjoy spending time with quality and innovative tools [Lord knows, I have more than my fair share]...
Nor-Vise... NO regrets!
