Flies at the water

A small image gallery with some images I seem to shoot quite a few of: flies resting on rod handles or reels with the fishing water as a backdrop

This might not seem as a subject for a whole article, but then again... what isn't? No excuse is too small to allow us to look at some nice images.
Recently when I went through my large archive of pictures, I noticed a trend: I shoot quite a lot of images of flies stuck into the rod handle or hooked onto the reel and held up in front of the fishing water or the landscape.

A dozen... that's more like a tendency...

A quick browse through the archive gave me several and a more detailed search brought more than a dozen up to the surface.
A dozen... that's more like a tendency than something random and more than enough to motivate me to do a small gallery article.

I like shooting these images because they show the fly in nice settings, and are much more interesting to look at than the fly in the vise. They also remind me of which flies I fished when and are a great supplement to articles on said flies, adding a bit of ambiance and if nothing else proving that the flies were actually used... out there... in reality.

Most of the times I simply stick the fly in a suitable place, lift the rod and shoot in on the camera's macro setting. I prefer not to stick the fly into the cork, but still do so once in a while. Using the reel seat or the reel is a better idea than poking holes in the cork. Many times I will use the metal part of the reel seat, which is embedded in the cork. That won't be hurt by the hook point.

Below this article you will find links to a lot of the flies shown here, so that you can tie them and bring them to your water to photograph them... and maybe fish them.

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
