The Ronker

Zonker: Rubber legs and a zonker... in orange. The Ronker is a fly for deep dwelling trout, featuring some weight bright colors, mobile materials and not least rubber legs.

Zonker Streamer Baitfish Fly Tying Directions and How To Tie Instructions

Bright Orange Zonker ~ Cone Head Streamer

A fly tying video showing how to tie a Cone Head Zonker Pattern. This big, weighted streamer is tied to catch big fish. Highly visible on the retrieve, flies like a Bright Orange Zonker can be made to imitate a number of bait fish, including goldfish. I have used this for trout, but I can imagine that a number of different gamefish species like pike and bass would mistake this for an innocent bite of food. Capt Matt Thomas lives in the Colorado Rockies near Aspen, CO throughout the Summer and Fall.

RK's Variant Sculpin

The Variant Sculpin is a pattern I designed with inspiration from many different patterns such as the "Sculpzilla" and the "Slumpbuster". This particular fly is tied on an AFF S403 (Down-eye, 3x-long, round-bend, streamer hook) by Allen Fly Fishing. AFF has a great selection of hooks, beads and much more. Slumpbuster

What a classic. The Slumpbuster comes for the vise of John Barr. John's book, Barr's Flies" is one of the best fly tying books that I own. I continually reference his book to refresh my tying skills and get inspiration on creating new fly patterns.

John Barr's Bouface

This is one of my favorite patterns tied by John Barr. This particular pattern, as well as other classic Barr patterns can be found in his book, Barr's Flies. The bouface is tied to mimic a leech and can be tied in many different color variations. The combination of squirrel hair, flashabou and marabou makes this an excellent fish catching pattern.

Squonker

Bonefish zonker fly

Maarten Bruinenberg ties an effective bonefishfly with just a zonker some flash and rubber legs. This fly does make a splash on the water so don't fish this pattern when the bones are super spooky! But when fished properly it is an absolute killer!

Grey Ghost bunny streamer

This fly comes from Flies that Catch Fish, but this version has dumbbell eyes to weigh it and keep the hook riding point up. I nicknamed it the grey ghost because of the grey bunny strip. It comes pretty close to imitating a striped finger mullet. I have caught redfish, spotted sea trout, snook, and flounder on this fly. It rarely fouls because the bunny strip is impaled on the hook. You can change the color of the bunny strip and flash to imitate your local baitfish. I use chartreuse and black barred olive versions too.
