When beginning to tie, some of the biggest struggles are around how to properly use the fly tying tools. Tasks as simple as starting your thread or placing the hook in the vise properly are not always as easy as they seem when you haven't ever done it before. And even more so, whip finishing or using a hair stacker becomes even more difficult, causing some of the biggest frustrations when just starting out.
I teach fly tying classes for injured vets. Two of the biggest hurdles that I find these beginner tiers to have to jump over are starting their thread properly and then whip finishing the fly. I see them tie some of the prettiest little flies and enjoy the process, but become either frustrated, or mess up the look of this fly when trying to whip finish.
Hopefully this video helps you all learn how to properly use these fly tying tools, and become proficient in the basics of fly tying. Once you learn these basics, the rest will come much easier.
