Crawl Daddy

This might be one of the most effective crayfish patterns you can fish for bass—especially around heavy cover.

The Crawl Daddy, originally designed by Jake Villwock, is an articulated crayfish fly built to ride hook-up, stay mostly snag-free, and create a ton of natural movement in the water. The splayed claws, lifted front end, and articulated rear section give it a highly realistic defensive crayfish profile that bass are used to keying in on.

In this video, I’ll walk you step-by-step through how to tie the Crawl Daddy, including materials, proportions, and a few small details that make a big difference in how the fly fishes. From the articulated rear section to the foam-supported claws, every part of this pattern is designed with movement and function in mind.

This is not the quickest fly to tie, but it’s one that really shines when you’re fishing around rocks, wood, and debris—places where bass spend most of their time. Because of how it rides in the water, you can confidently fish it in heavier cover without constantly worrying about hanging up.
