Extended Body Mayfly

The extended body mayfly creates one of the most lifelike silhouettes you can achieve with a dry fly. The segmented abdomen, natural curve, and lightweight profile allow this pattern to sit beautifully on the surface while perfectly imitating a natural mayfly.

In this step-by-step fly tying tutorial, I’ll show you how I build hollow extended abdomens using a sewing needle, dubbing, deer hair tails, and UV resin to create a durable and surprisingly buoyant fly.

While these flies may look difficult to tie, the process is actually much simpler than it appears once broken down into a few easy steps. This technique also opens the door to tying other realistic insects like parachute mayflies, stoneflies, crane flies, and more.
