The hares ear is a classic pattern that is almost as old as fly fishing its self. The fly dates back to the 1800's and in some accounts even could have some precursors to the pattern in the 1700's. It's about as simple as can be to tie, just utilizing hares ear dubbing (dubbing coming from the head of a rabbit, to create the entire body. The tail utilizes some of the longer fur near the forehead of the hares mask, and then it utilizes turkey tail or some other fiber for a wing case. In fact some of the original versions of this fly, and variations that are still tied today don't even tie them with a tail or wing case. one that comes to mind is called the Walt's worm, which is basically just the dubbing throughout. Of course this version also uses ribbing to make segments on the abdomen. With a simple list of materials, you would think that this wouldn't look like much, however you can manipulate the dubbing in such a way that the abdomen becomes more smooth, and allow for more guard hares sticking out by the thorax to look like little legs. Giving this a very lifelike appearance to the fish.
The ease of tying, and limited materials needed make this a great beginner pattern. However there are some challenges for the brand new tier to overcome. They must learn how to make dubbing noodles, manipulate materials like the dubbing, and form even ribs. However these techniques also add to why I think it's a great beginner fly pattern to tie. You can tie these simply and still catch fish, but over time learn proportions and techniques that will make this turn out looking and fishing even better. This fly will teach the beginner how to make dubbing noodles, how to proportion the abdomen and thorax, and also rib the fly properly. Many techniques that translate to almost all other nymph patterns.
However I still dont recommend the beginner to make this their very first pattern, instead I recommend the zebra midge if they want to tie nymphs. I stated this on last weeks video where I showed you all 4 different beginner fly patterns. However very shortly after tying a few of those zebra midges, the beginner should have enough skill to move into tying other patterns like these hares ear nymphs.
