There is no shortage of options for the fly tyer when it comes to finishing tube flies. Coneheads, discs and drainers are available in a vide range of designs, sizes, weights and colors. Some are subdued and intended for the fly's balance in the water, while others are more intended to create turbulence and greater attention to the fly and its materials.
However, the Danish fly tyer and fly fisherman Martin Votborg has gone his own way and has developed some simple plastic discs, which he today uses on the majority of his sea trout flies. In this way, even a small neutral fly can appear more alive to the fish, because it pushes the water around it a little, instead of just gliding through the current. In the river, the fish are met by many small natural things that are carried with the current, so it seems logical that something that moves across the current and pushes the water a little is perceived as something alive, explains Martin Votborg. In this video he will explain and demonstrate the tying of his super effective MV Flathead.
