Rabbit Zonker

No comments yet

Rabbit Zonkers are one of the most effective streamers ever created. Something about rabbit fur really attracts the fish. Rabbit is a material that is widely used in fly tying. Rabbit Leeches, baitfish streamers like this one, and even nymphs or dry flies, all types of flies can use rabbit fur. This rabbit leech pattern has been around for ages, and has really proven itself. It is still just as effective today as it was years ago, and just about every fisherman that fishes streamers has tried one. However not everyone ties these which is surprising because they are so easy. The fur itself is what makes the fish bite, so there is no need to make the fly look pretty. Even if you have never tied a fly before, just simply tie on a strip of rabbit fur to a hook and you have yourself a rabbit leech or baitfish. However today I show you all how to make these flies spruced up a bit, with a mylar body and some additions to make the fly look better.

Not only are these extremely easy to tie, but the materials are rather inexpensive as well. You can fill up a box with one package of rabbit strips, a box of hooks and a spool of thread. Adding things like the mylar body, lead wraps, and feather collar are not necessary but definitely add to this fly. And even those materials dont cost a lot of money either. Well all except a good saddle hackle. That can cost a fair amount. But use other materials for the collar if you want to add one, and you can fill up a box for less than $20, giving you enough flies to last a full season.

From trout, to bass, to even saltwater fish, both insure and offshore eat this fly. They are so versatile and can mimic a wide range of baitfish, or even worms or leeches depending on how you tie them. Every fly fisherman should learn to tie a rabbit zonker, as they can be effective in such a wide range of situations.

Since you got this far …

A money box
The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
