Spring Snipe & Olivewet

No comments yet

In this video, I’m tying a classic Spring Olive Wet Fly, a simple yet highly effective pattern for early-season trout.
As the water begins to warm and the first olives start to hatch, flies like this come into their own. Built entirely from natural materials, this pattern has a soft, subtle movement that perfectly suggests emerging insects, making it ideal for both rivers and lochs.
The body is formed with dyed olive Canada goose, creating a slim, natural profile, while a fine gold tinsel rib adds just enough flash. The wing is taken from a soft grey snipe feather, giving the fly a delicate, flowing silhouette in the water. Finished with a dyed olive partridge hackle, the fly comes alive as it drifts, imitating the movement of natural olives struggling to the surface.
Materials:
Thread: Fulling Mill Pro Thread – Brown 70 Denier
Tail: Grey Mallard
Rib: Extra Small Gold Tinsel or Wire
Body: Dyed Olive Canada Goose
Wing: Grey Snipe (Primary or Secondary Feather)
Hackle: Dyed Olive Partridge
This versatile pattern can be fished on rivers during spring hatches or on stillwaters, where it makes an excellent representation of the Lake Olive.
A timeless wet fly pattern that continues to produce season after season.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
