Wally Wing Mayfly

No comments yet

Looks Complicated, But It’s Not. This might be one of the cleanest mayfly wing techniques you can tie—but there’s a bit more to it than just the wings.

In this video, I walk you step by step through tying a Wally Wing mayfly, covering everything from prepping the quill, building a smooth tapered body, and getting the wings positioned just right.

The Wally Wing technique can look a little intimidating at first, but once you understand how to select and split the feather properly, it really isn’t that difficult. Like anything, it just takes a little practice to get consistent results.

I chose to use a quill body on this one because I like the clean, segmented look it gives the fly, but you can absolutely experiment with other materials once you get comfortable with the wing technique.

These flies might not be the best casters at longer distances, but for most fishing situations, they work just fine—and if a trout is willing to eat a standard dry fly, they’ll eat this too.

If you’ve never tied a Wally Wing before, this is a great place to start. Once it clicks, you can apply this technique to a wide range of mayfly patterns and make your flies look awesome!

Since you got this far …

A money box
The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
