Jim will be missed here in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. I have known Jim for nearly sixty years, spent many hours in his shop in Wolfeboro, where many of us who fished Lake Winnipesaukee and other lakes, would gather. His stories were great, you always learned something new. His Wolfeboro Bay Special has always been one of my favorite flies.

In the 60's and early 70's he would make the long trip to Boston for United Fly Tyer meetings. There was always a large crowd around him when he was at the tying bench. His legacy will long be remembered.

There's more than 6,500 videos on our video channel and claiming "that half of these videos are really commercials in disguise" is a pretty bold statement.

Sure some are commercials. These videos are brought to you for free, and some of the producers need more than intellectual satisfaction to motivate them. Doing commercials or having sponsors are ways this can work.

But in disguise...? I don't think so. Most of the commercial ones are pretty obvious endorsements, and don't try to hide the fact. On the contrary. That's the whole idea. And also: I screen every single video that comes online here, and I do not tolerate blatant commercials with no valuable content. I do accept some advertising if the video is good, but the channel is not a poster board for ads.

So if you find this almost endless stream of free content too commercial for your taste, simply don't watch it.

And I thought I was crazy getting the big three from a kayak. I would be hesitant to do that in Florida because there, sharks, gators and crocs can be a problem. I have never had a bull get interested in my kayak even though I hooked a few. Some of my friends however got some issues with sharks. Great pictures and video. Looking fwd to do something similar out of a hobbie inflatable. Cheers! Serge Thomas. Ph.D.

Jim was a great guy...I got to know him very well in the past few years..
We stayed in contact by phone and e-mails.
I always called him from my boat while trolling for Salmon..
Going to miss those great conversations...

For a no less expensive alternative to the Law vise you can look up the DamaSeal vise.
There are some other alternatives, of course, if you do an internet search.

hi Dave I have a scud fly that iam sure it is yours because it is done so well its a bead head woven with green on bottom and pink on top with ice dubbing for thorax the hook i would say is a 14 or16 scud hook and i can't seem to find it in your fly awsum fly colletion i have one here but iam lost how to weave this pattern sorry iam still new at this so if you have to time to respond it woud be a honer there is no hurry Dave iam sure you are busy man thanks ever so much in advance sorry for the book he he Gerry

I already saw the CAE vise some years ago when a debate was roaming somewhere online. I remember the waves breaking pretty heavily in that one. Particularly when someone said that Charlie Evans wasn't inspired by the LAW at all... A rip off may be putting it harshly, but the inspiration seems pretty obvious to me.

Well, I have and use my LAW - just that one (37 vises! sheesh!) - and I'm very pleased.

Recently, flea-bay listed a LAW with a $2850 buy-it-now option...
the bidding topped out at $1675 but failed the minimum reserve...
I suspect it will be re-listed with similar expectations... soonerorlater...
In 2012, the LAW that went for well over 3K was a one-of-a-kind with jaws crafted from Damascus Steel...
'reminds me of Charlton Signature Series reels... 'wish I had one of Jack's Titanium limited editions...

I too am a devotee of the LAW Vice. I purchased mine circa 1999 and have cherished every moment on the vice. Like a host of others, I was heartbroken to find out that Lawrence stopped making his masterpiece. A while ago I stumbled on a very similar and beautifully designed/machined vice also from the UK which appears to be based on the LAW design but with some interesting improvements. I encourage you to check out the CAE Vice by Charlie Evans. at caeengineeringservices.com. I have placed my LAW literally on a pedestal and exclusively use the CAE vice now. I should note that I have a collection of 37 different vices (vises) but this is the one I choose to use.

...i was 1972, the year before I graduated from high school, when i went into Paul's Fly shop on Green Street and was introduced to Warner's streamers...time and time again his smelt and attractor patterns were brought back as the benchmark...he was a guy who always made time for the important things...

I'am Wesley Rademaker I want to get started in Switch/ Spey fisching I looked ad a rod from Reddington "the Dually"
They have a Spey and Switch version both in a 7 or 8 weight to mee it's seems like the same rods appart from the length
Are there differences in Use like small or big fish and nimph's and streamers it is still not clear to me
Is a Switch rod suitble for salmon or do I need a Spey rod.

Maybe its just me

Maybe its just me being all fingers and thumbs, but I always find it easier to lay the line on the spool evenly when it is on the rod. You only need to mount the reel on the first section of the rod not the whole rod, and pass the line through the first eye. THis enables you to wind and guide the line onto the spool while applying sufficient tension to get it to lie evenly.

The assistance of a second person to hold the backing spool or fly line spool on a pencil or similar item, so that it can rotate freely and give line as you take it, ensures no tangles, birds nests, or spools of line unrolling across the floor while you have your hands full. There are of course gadgets you can buy for spooling and unspooling lines, but few of us unspool and store our lines off the reels as we theoretically should, so these are really a luxury, when you could spend the money on something likely to catch you more fish!!

Great information for all newcomers to the sport, and even not so newcomers, that have been doing it "their way", and not necessarily the right way.

In fast moving water ,would a weight forward Sinking Tip fly line be ok for any of the mentioned rigs,including an emerger as the fly nearest the leader,then the nymphs.Thanks,Jeff
