Fishing a new Lake, catching big bluegill!

No comments yet

This trip out to Inks Lake turned into one of those fishing trips where the adventure became just as memorable as the fish themselves. I spent the day exploring new water, searching for structure, and trying to figure out where the fish were holding around the lake.

A lot of the trip was spent hiking the shoreline, checking maps, and looking for rocky points and shallow structure that looked like they might hold bass and panfish. Eventually I started finding fish stacked up around some of the rocky areas, and once I located them the action really started picking up.

Along the way I caught quite a few bluegill, some really solid sunfish, a few bass, and even ran into some carp cruising the shallows while moving between spots. Some of the most fun fishing of the trip came from simply exploring and figuring the lake out as I went.

Not every fishing trip has to be about giant fish or nonstop action. Sometimes the best part is just getting outside, exploring new water, and learning a lake one spot at a time.

The following morning I had the opportunity to help teach a fly fishing class for disabled veterans, which honestly ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip. It was a really meaningful experience and something I’m extremely grateful to have been part of.

That next morning also turned into one of the more nerve-racking mornings I’ve had while fishing. While wading the shoreline, I had a very close encounter with a cottonmouth snake that completely changed how relaxed I felt standing in the water. After that, I spent most of the morning constantly looking around instead of concentrating on fishing.

The rod, reel, and line I used throughout this trip were from Risen Fly. They really are amazing setups for the money, especially if you’re looking for a solid fly fishing setup without spending a fortune. Since you got this far …

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
