Flash Back Pheasant Tail

The Flash Back Pheasant Tail is one of my favorite flies to fish in the winter for trout. Winter trout are lethargic and rarely move for food, but there is enough room to hide some lead wraps in these flies, making this a heavy fly without having to add a bead. Of course you can add a bead if you wish, or tie it without the weight and drop it behind a heavily weighted nymph or some lead shot on your line. That flash in the wing case also catches the fishes attention which I think is important during the winter. These trout aren't actively searching for food, so any time you can get their attention is a good thing.

Pheasant tails are also fairly easy to tie without much material. Just pheasant, wire, flash and peacock hurl. There are a few challenges, but one you get the hang of them, you can tie a dozen of these in an hour allowing you to fill boxes quickly. Which I like especially for winter fishing. You really need to fish these deep, so you will get snagged often. Nothing is worse than loosing flies that take a long time to tie.
