In Darbee's book "Catskill Fly Tier" he references two great Steenrod patterns that were very popular when he was a kid. They were wingless flies with a mix of hackle and - one gray/one tan. We do not get anymore info on what the mix of hackle might have been or what was used to make them gray or tan.
In another part of the book he mentions how Steenrod liked to tie his mixed hackles with the shiny side of the hackles facing in opposite directions. He also mentions they are wound in opposite directions. So there are a couple combinations that that could mean but we do not know which one.
Because Steenrod invented one of the most famous Catskill dry flies - The Hendrickson - finding information beyond that online is challenging. I took some guesses and some assumptions and went for it - the result could be completely wrong!
