95% of the time, there’s a shrimp at the end of my line when I start my seatrout trips in the salt. I begin with shrimp patterns because they’re a good size, and you can fish them fast when you’re searching for fish.
I really like the new All Clear Shells from Pro Sportfisher. It’s great that you can see all the materials through them. You can even place materials directly under the shell — on this fly, for example, I added a bit of flash. It could just as well be feather fibres or hair.
This pattern has a very neutral look, but most of the time I like to add a small amount of hot or UV-coloured dubbing for the “mouth parts” or another small area in a contrasting colour. You can also use hot colours on the eyes. I don’t use much flash in my shrimp patterns — and in some of the really effective ones, none at all.
I’m a big fan of Alpaca dubbing and think it has a beautiful, natural shine.
