What tools do you actually need?

No comments yet

The tools needed to start tying flies is the most expensive part of your beginning stages of tying flies. There are 100's or even 1000's of different tool types, and dozens or more of each from different manufacturers. This can make the beginner confused and overwhelmed when starting off. Many times the beginner will just buy a fly tying tool kit, and either get junk tools that they will soon need to replace, or spend way too much on a set that has tools they might never need. Instead I recommend piecing out each piece in order to save money. But what tools to get? Well I hope this video helps you figure out what tools you need, if you're just getting into tying.

As I said in the video, here is a list of the different tools I discussed, and links to where you can purchase them. Keep in mind that prices do change, and they can go up or down. I cannot tell the future, all I can do is go over what the costs are right now. Also, I dont have every single tool ever made, so I only was able to show what I have experience with. If you know that there is a tool that you would like different than what I suggested, by all means get that one.

Since you got this far …

A money box
The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
