Here we will be tying the fly Gullið or the Gold. About 30 years ago Kári Ölversson tied the first version of this fly for Veiðivötn. At that time the fly was considerably heavier than we know it today and was tied with a dumbell eyes. The reason the original version was heavier was simply that in the fly’s birth year there were few heavy lines available to get the fly down in the lakes, but as a selection of heavier lines became available, the fly was simplified and lightened, tied with a bead instead of a cross-head. Today most people who fish the Veiðivötn and other highland lakes and reservios carry this fly in their boxes, as it is exceptionally productive. Most people believe in the original tail color, but there are those who like to have it with a yellow tail as well, even made of UV marabou, just in case the trout grow bored with the traditional version.

People’s tastes have changed a lot in 30 years and few probably find it as clumsy as I once did. The trout’s taste has not changed at all — it is still crazy about this fly.

Tail: Ginger Marabou + 3-4 strands of pearl flashabou.
Body: Semperfli Holographic chenille, Gold 8mm.
Bead: Golden tungsten bead in 4mm.
Head: Same as thread.
Tools: Dr. Slick.
Vise: Renzetti Traveller 2304.
