Fishing San Diego

The forums are very quiet

The Global FlyFisher forum has existed for almost as long as the site, and the oldest posts are more than 20 years old. Forums aren't what they used to be. Social media has taken over a lot of their roles, and the GFF form is very quiet ... to put it mildly.
We keep everything online for the sake of history, and preserve the posts for as long as possible, but as you will see, quite a few of them aren't in a good shape, but rely on old images hosted elsewhere, which are no longer available, odd codes from old systems and much more, which can't be shown in a decent way.
But the posts are here, and you can - if you insist - start new threads. But don't stay awake waiting for replies, because they are unfortunately few and far apart.

Hi

My name is Martin and I’m a new user of Globalflyfisher. I have a job in San Diego in the start of April and am hoping to sneak a fly rod in the luggage and find some coastal water to cast a fly into. But I don’t know if there is any change of catching anything from the coast or if all fishing is done from the numerous (and somewhat expensive) charter boats.

If you have any experience with the fishing near San Diego or have the website of a good charter company please let me know.

Best Regards

Martin

Martin:
Can't tell you where but there is fishing from the surf out there. A friend from another list took a job out there and he posted several fishing reports about fishing the surf and some of the fresh water lakes out that way. You might do a web search and see what you can find. I think Dan Blanton has web site where you might find some information.
When I'm traveling for work, and I know I'm going to have some free time, I usually pack my travel rod in my luggage, along with a box of flies, a vest, and since I go to warm places, some wading boots. So far all my stuff has arrived in one piece.

Hi Martin,

I actually live in San Diego and you can contact me when you want to go fishing. If I am around I can take you fishing, subject to my working schedule. I travel a lot.

Depending on the time of the year there are several things to do, not all of them are fly fishing thogh.

Two websites to check out:

sdfish.com......the local fishing board

Try also a search on the web for Conway Bowman and Mako Shark on the Fly.

I do have a boat and we can go shark fishing, if you want, but no guarantees though. These beast are tricky.

Let me know when you are in San Diego.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
