GFF Summit 2009 will happen!

The forums are very quiet

The Global FlyFisher forum has existed for almost as long as the site, and the oldest posts are more than 20 years old. Forums aren't what they used to be. Social media has taken over a lot of their roles, and the GFF form is very quiet ... to put it mildly.
We keep everything online for the sake of history, and preserve the posts for as long as possible, but as you will see, quite a few of them aren't in a good shape, but rely on old images hosted elsewhere, which are no longer available, odd codes from old systems and much more, which can't be shown in a decent way.
But the posts are here, and you can - if you insist - start new threads. But don't stay awake waiting for replies, because they are unfortunately few and far apart.
Martin

Folks,

We are once again ready to start embarking on the journey, which ends up somewhere in Denmark with the fly fishing party called The Global FlyFisher Summit.

This year the Summit will take place in [b:1a2659dac3]the weekend September the 18th-20th 2009.[/b:1a2659dac3]

We have had great luck with our September venues before, and there is no reason to change this tradition. Weather has been great, fishing good and the camaraderie beyond description.
I expect us to stay in the same hostel as we have done the previous years and with a little luck we can get to fish the same water. But since I haven't contacted any of the locations, there is no guarantee. I just wanted to dates to be known for those who need to arrange days off, traveling etc.
The conditions and price is expected to be in the same range as the previous years - in other words very fair and dirt cheap.

I need not remind previous participants of the exquisite and fun experience it has been to go, but for those who haven't been there, here are the announcements and reports from the three previous Summits.

As usual I will offer spaces first to last year's participants and after that announce the remaining spots to everybody on a first come, first served basis.

See you in September

Martin

Great news Martin ! I was just speaking to Paul yesterday on the phone about this years summit.

Count me in ! It will be great to see all the faces again in one place !

Great to hear about the Summit. :D
My only comment relates to accommodation - no doubt it is comortable and we always got what we had asked for.... Nevertheless, I think we spend too much time travelling from Odense , as the town itself is centrally located and we always depend on hostel breakfast and dinner. Then we miss quite a good "fishing time" - mornings and evenings.

Shouldn´t we consider either changing the hostel, or the system of food provision?

Just an idea...

Hi Vanuz,

I could not agree more..... it would be great to be closer to the water, which would allow us to fish before breakfast, as well as after dinner...

see you there..

Ruan

Good Points... I understand that some participants to the summit do come from a far and are not danish residents and want to fish more. So it would be a great idea to find a place nearer the water. But may be the option is a summer house or even we just camp it out.

Hopefully something can be arranged, but it will take more work to find a place that is big enough for everyone to stay at the same place.

Looking forward to meeting you all again and catch up on the past year.

Steve

Guys,

I know that the issue of distance has been discussed before, and I know that traveling from Odense to almost any part of the coast takes time, but the choice of hostel has been dictated by two things: capacily and convenience.

Kragsbjerg, the hostel we have used, is able to accommodate 40-50 people and cater to them.

They have been very service minded and offered a good price. Heck they even sendy me a Christmas card every year!

I would gladly find a new place, and have looked into some locations on the west coast of Fyn, but I spend many hours preparing this gig already, and finding a new place at the same price and service level as we are used to is another chore on top of the rest.

I will be more than happy to use a new place, and should someone feel the urge to do some research and drop me a mail with the details - location, capacity, price, availability - feel free to do some scouting.

Martin

Sudden silence, huh? ;-)

I have looked into some hostels in the Assens and Middelfart area, and most seem to be booked. The one in Assens doesn't have one single bed available in the weekend we need it!

But the owner is trying to help me find something else. It's either that or move the summit to another weekend.

What say you? Have you all booked your vacation, or can we push it to one weekend earlier or later?

Martin

Hi Martin,

I have booked my vacation, I could move it (hopefully), but I have always found it to be a great event in Odense, and would be happy with the way it has been done in the past.

Either way look forward to seeing all of you again, where ever that might be.

Paul

I was pesonally hoping for the site that Ripley mentioned at the last summit.
But probably that´s out of question. :D

Hi,

One weeken earlier or later would be fine with me as i have not booked any holiday yet plus its my sons birthday on the 19th :)

Steve

Folks,

It seems that finding vacant hostels or similar facilities with room for 40 people in September isn't as easy as I thought. I have tried Assens and Fredericia, which is close, but September seems fully booked.

None of the places I have asked has enough room for us, so I have now asked Kragsbjerg in Odense again, but not heard back yet.

Regarding the houses on Wedellsborg, I would sure like to stay there too, but first of all we might be a bit late to book them, I have no idea what they cost (I expect them to be expensive), and we (read: I) will probably have to arrange shopping, cooking, cleaning and whatnot, which I am very reluctant to do, so I honestly haven't looked further into that option.

I will return with news about a place as soon as I know more.

Martin

Folks,

Options are thinning out... Fredericia on the other side of Lillebælt is out. No vacancies...

Odense where we have stayed the other years hasn't returned yet but promised to do so soon. If they have the space I'll make the reservation and make sure that we have a place to stay. It might be 40 minutes away from our preferred water, but it has a roof and beds and food inside!

Martin

The houses at Wedellsborg are booked so far in advance that you may need to ink your name on the list for the GFF 2011 summit.
Prices are expensive and catering is done by - us.
Cleaning is another issue. The house will have to be left spotless and that's time spent away from the water.

It's sounds rather fun and cosy but I doubt anyone is willing to put the time and effort into cooking and cleaning without the odd arguement and scrapping and bitching about whos turn it is. Believe me, we'll come up with endless excuses. Prevention is better than cure!!!

I personally think that Martin does a great job organising the whole event and rather than people throwing suggestions into the mix etc, they should stand up and do something to aid his hard earned effort.

What's the other option...if your unhappy with Odense?
Hunting down a quiet patch of turf closer to the venue and pick up the phone.

Rip

I appreciate Odense. In relations to that what we drive normally to go fishing are fourty minutes peanuts. On the other hand I see it as an option - if it is necessary you can reach the most other attraktive fishing places within just the same time. Maybe we should discuss alternatives if we meet in Odense.

By the way: Thanks at all which are involved for organizing that all again!

Frank

...it was just an idea guys, no need to change the venue for my sake, of course.
I have just brought up this topic as I heard people discussing the matter quite often at the previous Summit.
Should that be Odense, fine, count me in!

Due to endless training and expedition preparation, I will not be attending this years GFF summit. Sorry. Other priorities call...

I may get time to visit for an hour or two during training, (collecting donations), but doubtful if I will wetting a fly.

That doesn't stop you all kindly donating DKK 50,- (or as much as you see fit) to the two worthy children's charities I am supporting - namely - UNICEF and Hope & Homes for Children and my effort.

If I don't hear from you, I WILL be visiting the beach with my collection box. That's no joke. I may even stand at the gate as you drive through.

I can hear the silence now. Thanks in advance!

Regards
Ripley

Rip-van-extortioner,

I will make sure that no one pays you in advance, so that we are sure to see you at the water! You can't fail us just because you are planning a leisurely walk in a Mongolian park!

Martin

Extortioner..?

Quote: Extortion, outwresting, or exaction is a criminal offense which occurs when a person unlawfully obtains either money, property or services from a person, entity, or institution, through coercion.

Really...

I hope you and the rest of you silent bunch, don't think and mean this..?

A quote, label and name I take seriously.

Ripley

Ripley,

I'm very sorry if I offended you.

I was feebly trying to express the fact that we would miss you.

The word might not have been wisely chosen, but there was no deeper meaning.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher has recently been updated to a new publishing system, and there may be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
