new Sage Z-Axis

The forums are very quiet

The Global FlyFisher forum has existed for almost as long as the site, and the oldest posts are more than 20 years old. Forums aren't what they used to be. Social media has taken over a lot of their roles, and the GFF form is very quiet ... to put it mildly.
We keep everything online for the sake of history, and preserve the posts for as long as possible, but as you will see, quite a few of them aren't in a good shape, but rely on old images hosted elsewhere, which are no longer available, odd codes from old systems and much more, which can't be shown in a decent way.
But the posts are here, and you can - if you insist - start new threads. But don't stay awake waiting for replies, because they are unfortunately few and far apart.

Hi fishing fanatic:)))
On new season 2007 SAGE make new rods Z-Axis. What you think? It is better than old XP series? I was fish with new 796 and 696, I think that this new rod is tooo fast and light. It is very good for casting but for fishing ??? I want to know your opinions....

Matej,

You are sooo right! I haven't tried the new Sage rods, but on a general level I find this fast action rod craze way too much.
Many new rods may be good for casting far, but for casting nicely, presenting delicately and fighting...? It's not my cuppa!

Whenever someone hauls out one of these wiz rods, I just remind them that my good old Partridge splitcane rod - 7' for a 4-weight line - can lay out close to a whole WF line as delicately as a butterfly lands (well almost at least). I find that most of the rods I like to fish are medium fast, progressive, on the heavy side - and a blessing to fish with!

Fast isn't always better!

Hi Matej!

A dangerous question! Questions of that sort usually turn out pretty long threads, but then again this site is not so much a casting site as it is a fishing site.
Most Sage rods I have tried are rather unforgiving, but that is part of the point I think. I guess you're right that they are good casting rods and for some that is the same thing as a good fishing rod.
Others just like to fish and want a rod that casts easily and sufficiently far and I think that Martin thinks of himself in this category.

I havent tried the new z-axis, but it probably follows the sage stile, so if you're on the lookout for an undemading rod, its probably not for you.
I like demaning rods, its a nice sence of success when you learn to control a demanding rod and because they are demanding, it usually means that you're in for a treat, when you learn to master its potential.
But on the other hand, those things haven't got much to do with fishing and as always, these things are very individual

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
